It was the great unknown when Danny Southern arrived at the Western Oval from Claremont.
Taken at pick 92 in the 1992 National Draft, Southern played 24 games in his debut season in 1994, polling 12 Brownlow Medal votes in six of those games.
But Southern wasn’t your typical footballer. With his eccentric haircuts and fondness for reptiles – especially his pet snake 'Rhonda', Southern grew a cult following on and off the field.
Southern remained a staple of the Dogs’ backline throughout the 90s, with the rugged defender finishing his career with 103 games.
He retired in 2000, aged just 25, due to a chronic knee injury.
