But for the Bulldogs, it surely has to be regarded as an opportunity lost.

After being outplayed in the first term, they managed to hit the lead early in the second term and boasted a numerical advantage that should have put them in the box seat.

Marcus Bontempelli (32 possessions) and Luke Dahlhaus (28) battled away gamely for the Bulldogs.

While the Bulldogs had 51 inside 50s compared with their opponents' 52 entries, they managed just 10.13 – including a couple of majors from the goal-square following 50m penalties – which was the team's lowest score since kicking 6.9 in a losing effort versus the Kangaroos in round six.

Marcus Bontempelli was the best for the Bulldogs with 32 disposals as he worked tirelessly for four quarters. Luke Dahlhaus (28), Jack McRae (26) and Lachie Hunter (24) also provided plenty of drive.

Tory Dickson, Lin Jong and Toby McLean all kicked two each but Jake Stringer was well held by Joel Patfull.

Easton Wood did well to contain Cameron when moved onto him in the second quarter.
