The Western Bulldogs have fallen short in their Round 1 VFLW clash with Williamstown on Saturday morning.
Despite holding a narrow lead at each change, the Bulldogs couldn’t withstand the Seagulls’ final-quarter push, eventually going down in a tightly contested battle at Mission Whitten Oval.
It was a strong start from the Dogs, with Mary Sandral kicking the opening goal to set the tone early.
A two-goal to one-behind second term helped the Bulldogs to a six-point lead at the main break, which they maintained heading into the final quarter.
But Williamstown finished with momentum, taking their chances in the last to edge ahead and seal the win.
Despite the result, there were encouraging signs across the ground, particularly in the midfield's defensive efforts while under pressure.
Recruit Sarah Sansonetti finished with 22 touches and six marks, while Ellie Bishop recorded 15 disposals and three tackles.
Captain Steph Asciak claimed 14 disposals, seven tackles and seven clearances.
The red, white and blue will next face the Darebin Falcons at Mission Whitten Oval on Saturday 26 April.
