Round 13 saw Williamstown take on Werribee last Sunday, both Clubs had records of 23 wins apiece leading into this important game.

Williamstown made 5 changes to the side which defeated the Casey Scorpions – into the side came Stephen Tiller, Easton Wood, Dylan Joyce, Malcolm Lynch and Matthew Cravino who was making his senior debut after being on the Williamstown list for 4 years and playing 60 Reserves games. Out of the side went Sam Reid who was promoted to the Bulldogs seniors, Cam Lockwood and Ayce Cordy missed through injury and Matthew Notman and Tom Langlands were left out of the side.

First Quarter
Williamstown bounced out of the blocks with Captain Brett Johnson back to his best and setting the tone of the game. Brennan Stack and Jarrad Grant kicked the opening two goals and the Williamstown defence was standing tall and rebounding through Tim Callan, Ben Davies, Dylan Addison and Andrejs Everitt. Patrick Rose bobbed up and kicked a goal as the Seagulls led 3 goals to nothing after 20 minutes whilst kicking into a slight breeze. Werribee responded by kicking 4 goals in the final 7 minutes of the quarter with Nathan Thompson and Michael Barlow each kicking 2 goals.

Second Quarter
Werribee continued their surge with Tim Bongetti kicking the opening goal of the quarter as the Tigers opened up a two goal lead. Ruckman Wayde Skipper was dominating the stoppages plus winning plenty of the ball around the ground which was capped off by 2 great goals. Ben Jolley, Guy O’Keefe, Xavier Gotch, Matthew Cravino and Dylan Joyce were winning plenty of the ball and goals to Joyce, Grant and Malcolm Lynch helped the Seagulls to gain control and lead by 16 points at the long break.

Third Quarter
The all important third quarter was decisive with Williamstown flexing their all over strength as an inaccurate Werribee was unable to take advantage of 11 shots at goal. Matthew Little who had been quiet in the first half begun to have an influence with his strong marking and kicked 2 goals. Patrick Rose was also menacing and kicked 2 great goals and when Everitt, O’Keefe, Stack and Skipper also kicked majors the Seagulls had established a 40 point lead. Addison, Tiller, Davies, Callan, Williams and Wight combined to limit Werribee to 3 goals for the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
Werribee opened the final quarter with consecutive goals to Nathan Thompson and Leigh Adams to reduce the lead to 5 goals. Williamstown responded with 2 goals to Dylan Joyce who was very influential. Up forward Werribee was unable to cover Jason Cloke, Jarrad Grant and Matthew Little who were dominant. Nathan Thompson was a lone target for Werribee and his 8 goals was a great individual effort in a losing side. Goals to Jolley, O’Keefe, Skipper and Cloke resulted in another 8 goal quarter and a strong 59 point victory.

Reserve’s Wrap
Williamstown recorded its 11th consecutive victory with a hard fought 31 point victory over Werribee. This was the third time the 2 Clubs had meet at Reserves level in 2009 and an inaccurate Williamstown was incapable of punishing the Tigers on the scoreboard even though they dominated the game.
Dean Galea was influential up forward with 10 marks and 4 goals and Luke Cartelli, Dane Rampe, Tom Langlands and Josh Young were productive midfielders. Matthew Grossman was outstanding as a rebounding defender with 27 touches and Scott Meyer was very good in a variety of roles.

Next Sunday 12th July Williamstown plays Coburg Tigers in Round 13 action at Burbank Oval. Coburg had a convincing 36 point victory over the Northern Bullants and currently sits in 6th position on the ladder with a 6 – 5 win / loss ratio.
