In bitterly cold and windy conditions local Western Suburbs rivals Williamstown and Werribee slugged it out in the Round 3 ABC TV match of the day at Burbank Oval on Sunday.
Both sides went into the game undefeated and a spirited tough game was expected.
Williamstown made 4 changes to the side that defeated Collingwood in Round 2 – into the side came Stephen Tiller, Scott Welsh, Brennan Stack and Xavier Gotch for his first game. Out of the side went Jarrad Grant and Robert Murphy who were promoted to the Bulldogs and Malcolm Lynch was dropped.

First Quarter
Williamstown won the toss and kicked with the prevailing win. Ruckman Wayde Skipper was again in great form and he was providing midfielders Brett Johnson, Guy O’Keefe, Ben Davies and David Stretton with plenty of supply. Ruck Rover Sam Reid was able to take advantage of some smart clearance work to kick 2 long goals in the opening stanza. Defenders Stephen Tiller, Andrejs Everitt, Cam Lockwood and Tim Callan were continually pumping the ball forward. Late goals to Rose (2) and Little enabled Willi to establish a 37 point lead at the first break.

    Williamstown 5.7        Werribee 0.0

Second Quarter
Werribee now had an opportunity to utilise the wind but Williamstown produced an outstanding defensive quarter of playing smart and disciplined footy. Jason Cloke was the architect up back and he led his fellow defenders in denting Werribee’s space up forward. When in possession Werribee players continually kicked the ball out of bounds or to the defensive pocket. Vice Captain Rob Castello received a free kick to kick his side’s opening goal but it was there only goal for the quarter.

    Williamstown 5.9        Werribee 1.3

Third Quarter
Williamstown again had use of a strong wind to set up an unassailable lead but Werribee came out in this quarter with greater purpose and were able to control the tempo in the opening 10 minutes. Patrick Rose kicked the opening goal of the quarter but Alan Obst was able to reply quickly for Werribee and in doing so kicked the first goal at the scoreboard end.
The final 10 minutes of the quarter was all Willi’s as Rose (2), Stretton and Everitt goaled to establish a 58 point lead at ¾ time.

    Williamstown 10.15        Werribee 2.5

Fourth Quarter
Willi was able to outscore Werribee in the final term even though they were kicking against a strong breeze. Castello kicked Werribee’s only goal of the quarter but forwards Little and Cordy were able to kick goals for the Seagulls. Skipper, Cloke, Johnson, O’Keefe and Reid continued their fine games whilst Jolley, Wood, Gotch and Cartelli were fine contributors.
