AFLW assistant coach Matt Skubis says he is settling into life at the Bulldogs nicely.

Crossing from Carlton – where he took charge of the forwards - ahead of the upcoming 2023 NAB AFLW season, Skubis said he is excited to lead the Dogs’ defenders.

“I’ll let the rabbit out of the hat – they call themselves the business end,” Skubis said.

“They love the idea of getting down and dirty, and doing a lot of the hard work to set up the foundations of what goes ahead.

“From that point of view, they’re a really well-connected group.

“I’ve said this to a few players, but some that are coming in and out through conditioning – they seem to seamlessly fit back in, so I’m pretty fortunate with the group that I’ve got.”

Skubis said he’s been impressed by the squad’s commitment to preseason, and expects things to ramp up with scratch matches on the horizon.

“I think the thing I like most is that Burkey seems to have a good structure around how he wants to go about things – the playing group have really bought in too.

“I’m really happy being here and look forward to what’s going to happen this season.

“It’s already competitive between the forwards and backs, so I think you’ll see that go up another notch (in practice matches).

“All of the players are really keen and keep asking for it, so we’re excited to see where it takes us.”

The Bulldogs will launch their 2023 NAB AFLW Season against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday 2 September.
