LAST TIME THEY MET
Western Bulldogs 21.13 (139) def. North Melbourne 11.5 (71)
The Bulldogs enjoyed another Good Friday outing against the Roos in round five last year, claiming a 68-point win at Marvel Stadium. Leading by a promising 45-points at quarter-time, the Dogs looked in for a huge day before North Melbourne found a 16-minute patch of dominance to just about cut the gap in half at the main break. That momentum was short-lived however, as the Bulldogs stormed home 11 goals to five. Cody Weightman and Aaron Naughton added five goals each, while Bailey Smith was named best on ground for his 43 disposals, seven marks, four tackles, seven inside 50s and 646 metres gained.
TALKING POINTS
1. 50 for Flea
Sunday’s match will bring up the 50-game milestone for high-flying forward Cody Weightman.
It’s been quite the whirlwind journey for the 22-year-old – who became a Bulldog via pick 15 in the 2019 National Draft.
He made his career debut while in the Gold Coast hub against Essendon, but didn’t cement his spot in the side until midway through 2021.
Weightman bagged an equal career-record five goals against North in round five last season, and will be hoping for a similar output come Sunday afternoon.
2. Battle of the Baileys
Up to four Baileys could take to the field on Sunday afternoon across the two Clubs – Bulldogs Smith, Williams and Dale, and Roo Scott.
The Dogs trio have enjoyed individual patches of form over the season so far, with Smith in particular putting in a prolific performance (43 disposals, seven marks, four tackles, seven inside 50s) in their last meeting against North Melbourne.
Williams and Smith have both added some wing time to their match minutes in varying weeks too, while Dale has assumed his customary half-back rebounding role in defence.
Young Kangaroo Bailey Scott has also impressed for the Roos this past month, averaging career-high disposals (19.5), marks (4.7) and tackles (2.3) from his time on the outside.
3. Home sweet home: Away edition
While North Melbourne will have hosting duties come Sunday afternoon, the Bulldogs should take great confidence heading into the clash at Marvel Stadium.
While they’ve lost their last two at the Docklands venue, their overall winning percentage stands at 51% under the roof.
Remarkably, North Melbourne has the same winning percentage, but haven’t tasted victory against the Dogs there since round 10, 2019.
While nothing is guaranteed in football, if the Dogs can draw on their previous results against the Roos – striking an average winning margin of 69 points - the red, white and blue faithful should be in for a treat.
