Premiership defender and three-time Club Champion Matthew Boyd has added Bulldogs’ Hall of Fame induction to his career accolades.
Boyd played just shy of 300 matches in the red, white and blue across 15 seasons, with his 292-game record for most games played by a rookie still standing today.
After making his AFL debut in 2003, he solidified a spot in the side the following year and was a key part of the Bulldogs’ resurgence across the next five seasons.
Boyd made his mark in 2009, rewarded for a strong season with his maiden All Australian selection and Charles Sutton Medal, before being appointed captain in 2011.
Relishing the captaincy, he claimed his second All Australian selection in his first year as skipper, as well as back-to-back Club Champion medals in 2011 and 2012.
Injury restricted the veteran’s impact in 2013 – playing just 13 games due to a broken cheekbone and calf concern – subsequently relinquishing the captaincy at the end of the season.
Boyd’s leadership and experience was crucial in the 2016 premiership run, recognised with his third selection in the All Australian team after averaging 27 disposals and a kicking efficiency of 77%.
Formally announcing his retirement at the end of the 2017 season, Boyd later turned to coaching and currently serves as Fremantle’s backline coach.
Established in 2010, the Footscray-Western Bulldogs Hall of Fame honours those whose involvement and contribution to the Club has been significant, memorable and worthy of celebration.
