Western Bulldogs Development Coach Peter German dissects how each of the Bulldogs listed players fared in Williamstown's defeat over Werribee on Sunday.
Fletcher Roberts: Played his first senior game for the season and scored three goals with three kicks, so not a bad return. It was probably a game for him to get back into the swing of senior VFL footy. It was great to have him back into the side, we know he is a smart footballer but probably needed a run to realise he needs to bring the tempo up.
Michael Talia: Talia was really good. He defended well on his opponent and won a bit of the ball – he had about 22 possessions and gave us some good rebound at times. It was an exciting game from him.
Daniel Pearce: He started down back and it was probably a slow start, but once he got into gear, some of his attack on the ball and his defensive actions were really strong and aggressive. A lot of them resulted in some great rebound from our back half and then we put him in the midfield and he won a couple of centre clearances in there. He is really starting to develop his game and show his versatility.
Christian Howard: Howie was good, we played him on the wing. He laid six really strong tackles, and really gave his opponent very little space. The pleasing thing was he combined both parts of his game and that is what we wanted him to focus on and he did that really well.
Dylan Addison: His first half was excellent as a forward, he really hit the ball hard and he was strong and physical at the contest. Had a couple of shots on goal and was responsible for another couple of goals with his pressure. For his first game back we were pleased with his input. He faded in the second half, which we expected after missing a fair bit of footy since pre-season - but hopefully he can use that as a springboard to win his place back in the senior team.
Tom Campbell: We played him a bit more forward this week, we felt that is part of his development. He was probably not as effective as he would have liked but when he went into the ruck, I felt that his ruck play was as good as I’ve seen it – his follow up, he laid five or six tackles and gave the mids some really good service at ground level and at stoppages. We will keep chipping away and working on his forward craft.
Lukas Markovic: Marko was great down back. I have watched the game a couple of times and I can’t remember a time where he got beaten by his opponent. He was fantastic and gave us some good rebound as well, with his ball use.
Jarrad Grant: Granty started really well, again he showed in the first half that he’s got that x factor with speed and agility, while his ability to be able to recover quickly is second to none.
Tom Williams: It was disappointing, five minutes in he [pulled up with some adductor tightness], so he wasn’t able to play a further part in the game.
Patrick Veszpremi: It was probably played the best game I’ve seen him play – might even be the best game he has ever played. He had 37 possessions but it wasn’t so much that he got a lot of the ball, it was more how he won it. We’ve pushed him about his running ability, and I thought he covered the ground really well. He didn’t get the outside ball ahead of the play, he got back to the contest and supported his teammates and I was pleased with the way he played. He kicked three goals – and could have kicked six or seven. I am thrilled for him and it should be a big confidence booster for him.
Mark Austin: Aussie has been right up there as our best defender over the past couple of weeks. He is a really good competitor, and was given the job on [Ben] Warren, who is the leading goal kicker this year and I don’t think he kicked a goal - so that probably tells the story of his day.
Development League:
Lachie Hunter: He started playing as a forward and now we are starting to rotate him through the midfield and he is really starting to grow into that role. We are really pleased in how he is starting to think more professionally, his training standards have lifted and it is starting to come out in his game. He has taken on all the challenges so far and he is meeting them head on. I don’t think it will be too long until he is playing senior VFL footy.
Josh Prudden: Josh is the same – he is a pro. He is a great kid who is really professional and diligent about how he goes about his football and how he prepares. He had 27 or 28 possessions again on the weekend and he is a pure onballer. He is very smart, he is good around stoppages, he really keeps his feet in congestion under pressure and makes good decisions. Before too long Josh will get his opportunity and I am sure by the end of the year he will be playing some good VFL footy.
