Dogs to field side in inaugural AFL women’s match
The Western Bulldogs will be represented by a very different lineup in the round 14 curtain-raiser against Melbourne, with the Club set to participate in the inaugural AFL Women’s Exhibition Match at the MCG.
Celebrating the AFL’s annual Women’s Round, the exhibition match will highlight the top talent rising through the female ranks, with teams selected through a drafting process on May 15 2013.
The top 50 female footballers nationwide will go head to head in the first AFL sanctioned event for women, whereby participants represent one of the league’s senior AFL teams.
The event gives aspiring female footballers the ultimate experience of playing on the iconic MCG ground in the lead up to the Bulldogs’ clash against Melbourne.
Western Bulldogs chief executive Simon Garlick said the match was a unique and practical way of celebrating AFL Women’s Round.
“We are thrilled to be a part of the match and can’t wait to see the Bulldogs’ women’s representative team take to the MCG donning the red, white and blue.
“The Dogs look forward to building on the match to encourage women, especially from our diverse backyard in Melbourne’s West, to play our great sport.”
The match will take place on Saturday 29 June 2013 from 1.45pm at the MCG as the feature of Women’s Round.
The Bulldogs, in partnership with the AFL and Melbourne, are seeking female footballers and athletes alike to nominate for the first female draft in order to be a part of this milestone event.
Draft nominations close Friday 10 May 2013, with all females over the age of 17 across Australia eligible to enter.
Participants from a broad range of backgrounds are encouraged to apply for the draft which will be held via videoconference on Wednesday 15 May 2013 at the below locations.
All Western Bulldogs members who are selected in the drafting process will automatically be allocated to represent the Club.
