Footscray are well-equipped for a close battle against Williamstown in the VFL this Sunday, according to coach Ashley Hansen.

The Bulldogs host the Seagulls at VU Whitten Oval and will be looking to make it four wins a row ahead of the bye next weekend.

The Seagulls have endured some close matches in recent weeks and come out on top, but Hansen is confident his side will match it with the ladder-leaders.

“They’ve shown some good form, winning the closer games is a good demonstration of their competitiveness.

“I’m expecting a close game, it will be a really good tussle and it will be a good experience for our guys to be in that pressure environment.

“The last few weeks we haven’t been there and I welcome that to see how they handle it and how our systems and structures hold up.”

The Seagulls boast an experienced line up, with vice-captain Cam Lockwood playing his 100th game for the Club on Sunday.

Hansen believes his side are well-prepared for the challenge of a bigger-bodied side.

“Our guys get to test themselves against the best in the comp on the weekend which is exciting.

“It’s a challenge they’ve faced most week and equipped themselves well, I’ve got confidence we can match them play to our strengths.”

After Joel Hamling’s promotion to the senior side last weekend, and an injury to Zaine Cordy, the Dogs have looked to add to their defensive unit with the addition of Nick Coughlan as the 23rd man.

Coughlan has been a part of the Footscray squad and comes up from the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup competition.

“Nick is a promising young key defender who has been part of our squad while he’s studying at Victoria University.

“He uses the ball well, is athletic and competes well, I’m really looking forward to that.

“With Zaine going down and Joel stepping up, it creates an opportunity for team balance and gives Nick a chance at senior football.”
