Since 1925, 13 Western Bulldogs players have worn the coveted number three jumper.
Olliver, Whitten, Grant and Wallis are synonymous names in red, white and blue history and come 2023, a new name will don the significant digit.
Cody Weightman.
A fan favourite from the very beginning, Weightman has kicked 65 goals across his three seasons at the Kennel, becoming a staple of the Bulldogs forward 50.
The 21-year-old will join some of the greats on his locker, following in the footsteps of current Executive Director of Football Chris Grant.
Grant became a legend of the football club over his career, claiming two Charles Sutton Medals, four All Australian jackets and captaining the side for five seasons.
In 2012, Grant was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Equally, Ted Whitten will be remembered for as long as the Bulldogs exist.
Five best and fairest awards, one All Australian, 14 years as Footscray captain and named in the AFL Team of the Century as captain.
Whitten became the first Legend to be inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 1996.
“It’s a huge privilege and a massive honour to wear number three at the Western Bulldogs,” Weightman said.
“Obviously it is a number that carries responsibility and a deep history at our Club.
“I hope to do the number proud and represent those who have come before me, and it will be great to see the names on my locker every day.
“Mitch Wallis is a great mate of mine and it is a privilege to be able to take the number off him and transition that way into the rest of my career.
“The number speaks for itself, the likes of EJ and Granty who have come before me and worn the jumper proud.
“To be able to wear a number with great history that I am sure many a fan has worn on their back every time they support us, is something I am super privileged to do.”
