Williamstown have fallen to ladder leaders Geelong by 49 points at Burbank Oval over the weekend.
In a clash that lived up to all expectations as a top of the table matchup, the Cats overpowered the Seagulls in the final term to win out 19.21 (135) to 13.8 (86).
With Geelong boasting almost an entire AFL line-up, including premiership stars Paul Chapman and Josh Hunt, the Seagulls fought manfully against their much more experienced opponents.
Geelong blazed away in front of goal early, while Williamstown were able to make the most of their opportunities, kicking four goals straight in the first term to hold a seven-point lead at the quarter break.
A battle of attrition ensued in the second term, with neither team able to hit the scoreboard and produce a major until the 17-minute mark when Patrick Veszpremi goaled.
However, a purple patch by Geelong at the end of the term saw them kick multiple goals to take a 12-point lead into the second half.
The Seagulls wouldn’t give in though, going goal for goal with the Cats for much of the third term and early into the fourth.
A missed opportunity in front of goal for Williamstown in the final term resulted in an immediate goal for Geelong, which sparked a run on of goals for the Cats and ultimately dictated the remainder of the match.
Bulldogs-listed defender Lukas Markovic was once again consistent down back, shutting down his direct opponent and rebounding from defensive 50 with poise, while fellow Bulldog Fletcher Roberts had success at both ends of the ground.
The loss puts the Seagulls back into fourth position on the table, with an all-important road trip this week to North Ballarat to face the Roosters.
