The Western Bulldogs fielded 15 players under the age of 25 in Sunday’s opening round win against the Giants. Here are three in particular that stood out to us.
Rylie Wilcox
Stats: 13 disposals, two marks, one tackle
For a league debutant, 17-year-old Rylie Wilcox looked right at home on the wing for the red, white and blue . Wilcox’s speed and agility was impressive in her first hit-out, showing promising signs from her 13 disposals and two marks. Her first outing should give her plenty of confidence for the rest of the season and leave Bulldogs’ fans excited by what’s to come.
Gabby Newton
Stats: 12 disposals, nine tackles, two goals
A lot has been spoken about Gabby Newton, but her impact as a forward on Sunday was impressive, considering the 20-year-old had never even kicked a goal at AFLW level. Her pressure was immense - highlighted by her game-high nine tackles - as was her leading and presence as a marking target inside 50. The emotion she showed after kicking her first major was a moment to remember – and hopefully there’s plenty more where that came from.
Isabelle Pritchard
Stats: 19 disposals, three tackles, six clearances
Isabelle Pritchard claimed a spot in the AFLW 22under22 team in season six, and picked up exactly where she left off on Sunday. A childhood Bulldogs’ supporter, the 20-year-old notched up a career-high 19 disposals and six clearances. Her quick hands and decision-making was sound, with the move from defence to the midfield starting to reap dividends. Her efforts saw her receive four AFLCA votes too.
