Western Bulldogs youngster Jamarra Ugle-Hagan says it’s been nice to reap some rewards after putting in the work behind the scenes.
Nominated for the round 19 NAB AFL Rising Star award, the former number one draft pick enjoyed a career-best outing against the reigning premier, finishing with 10 disposals, six marks, five inside 50s and five goals - including a long-range match-winner from the boundary.
“I train that kick out on the field a lot – I always practice set shots with the boys from the boundary line, so it just came off nicely which was good,” Ugle-Hagan told media on Tuesday afternoon.
“I was hoping (a performance like that) would come soon. I’m doing the work during the week, so (I thought) it had to come at some point but if not, I’ll have to keep working harder.
“I’m out there, having fun and enjoying my footy. I found it a bit hard last year to find the fun in football because I was expecting way too much from myself as a player.
“It’s just coming out naturally now, which is part of my growth – just doing the little things right.”
Ugle-Hagan praised the selflessness of fellow key forward Josh Bruce, who despite not having the scoreboard impact he may like, is allowing the youngster to thrive.
“(Brucey’s) impact is coming, but I feel like on-field he’s still dominating as a key forward,” the 20-year-old said.
“He’s getting to the contest, he’s halving stuff and he’s even dragging my opposition (away) which opens up goals for me.
“He always tells me ‘you owe me three or four’, because he’s always taking my defender and letting me get it out the back. Hopefully his lick of the ice-cream will come soon.”
Since making his debut in round 17 last season, Ugle-Hagan has kicked 22 goals from 17 games.
