Two and a half decades since the final VFL/AFL game at Whitten Oval, the Bulldogs will commemorate the historic milestone by reprising a ‘Robodog’ replica guernsey as part of a Retro Round celebration in Round 21.
The Retro Round concept was created to mark the significant 25-year milestone of the last ever game played for premiership points at Whitten Oval, which occurred against West Coast in August of 1997.
The late 90’s specially themed guernsey design will be worn against the Fremantle Dockers on Saturday, August 6, where the current players will represent the history of the club, its past legends, the journey to now, and the Club’s bright future.
The historic VU Whitten Oval is undergoing a transformation over the next two years to make it a state-of-the-art precinct which provides cutting-edge facilities for its players, staff and community, while preserving elements of history which have made the Dogs’ home such a special place for more than 100 years.
The Bulldogs previously wore a commemorative guernsey when it remembered the ‘Fightback of 1989’ during the 2019 season.
The 2022 version of the iconic tri-colour jumper was worn by many Western Bulldogs legends, including Brad Johnson, Chris Grant, Luke Darcy, Tony Liberatore and Rohan Smith, to name a few.
The farewell fixture to Whitten Oval was played in Round 21 of the 1997 premiership season, seeing the Bulldogs run out 18-point winners over the Eagles in front of 26,704 fans.
Current assistant coach Rohan Smith kicked three goals in the emotional victory, while Chris Grant dominated the contest to collect the three Brownlow votes.
The Bulldogs’ Retro Round guernsey is now available in men’s, women’s and kids’ sizes, plus a limited amount of long sleeve jumpers.
The Bulldogs have also released a retro merchandise range to commemorate the occasion, featuring a jacket, cap, scarf, beanie, t-shirt and more.
Tickets for the Round 21 clash can be purchased via Ticketmaster.
The Club also has two special ticketing offers for Bulldogs fans for the clash with Fremantle:
