WESTERN Bulldogs skipper Matthew Boyd says he and his teammates have put their recent distractions behind them and remain firmly focused on the opening round of the NAB Cup.

The Bulldogs have been in the headlines since a video was released that showed some of their players skylarking in traffic on a post-season trip to Hong Kong.

However Boyd doesn't believe the events have interrupted the club's preparations for the season ahead.

"As a playing group and as a club we've dealt with that issue," Boyd said during the first day of the Dogs' Telstra AFL community camp in the western Victorian city of Horsham.

"We've put it behind us, and we're more than prepared to move on and get on with the season."

Having only recently been chosen to replace Brad Johnson as Bulldogs captain, Boyd is looking forward to leading his teammates out when they tackle Geelong and North Melbourne in round one of the NAB Cup at Skilled Stadium on Sunday, February 20.

"It's a new challenge and obviously I'm still learning a fair bit about the role and about how I should handle it," he said.

"To lead the boys out in the NAB Cup - if I get a game - will be a great opportunity."

Rodney Eade's men are desperate to go one better in the home and away season after bombing out in three successive preliminary finals.

While many pundits are tipping the Dogs to tumble down the ladder, the new skipper is confident the club has enough talent to make its first grand final since 1961.

"Obviously people have their opinion and that's fine," Boyd said.

"I really feel that over the pre-season we've improved. We've recruited really well, with a purpose, and we're training with a really strong purpose as well.

"We're working on things to make us a better side and hopefully we do fulfil that goal. We want to improve and that's what we're working towards."
