We all know how important the bond is between Mums and their bubs, especially in those early days as little ones adjust to life on the ‘outside’. Now, research shows that the connection between kids and their dads is just as crucial for their development.

The Western Bulldogs, in conjunction with Tweddle early parenting centre and Finch Publishing, recently launched the important new parenting guide, ‘The Dad Factor: How father-baby bonding helps a child for life’. Written by fatherhood expert, Dr Richard Fletcher, the book explains how a father’s involvement with his child from birth is vitally important to his or her physical, mental and social development.

Western Bulldogs key defender Dale Morris was in attendance at the launch.  A father to son, Riley, aged two, Morris said that being a Dad is his most important role.  “I didn’t really become a man until I became a father,” he says.  “And I came to admire my Dad all the more once my own son came along.”

The result of over 20 years research and experience working with boys, fathers and their families, Dr Fletcher’s book explores the evolution of a father’s role, answers questions for fathers-to-be and new dads, and considers fresh findings including:
• Rough and tumble play teaches little ones to manage emotions like excitement, frustration and aggression
• Playing together can alter the pathways formed by the neurons in the brain of growing infants
• Failure to bond closely can lead to long-term behavioural issues

“With many fathers among our playing team and administration staff, we were very pleased to host ‘The Dad Factor’ launch here at Whitten Oval,” says Western Bulldogs Chief Executive Simon Garlick. “Dr Fletcher’s findings are illuminating and extremely important for all fathers in our community to understand.”

Dr Fletcher pioneered research in men’s health and family issues in the 1990s and now leads the Fathers and Families Research Program at the University of Newcastle. He is also convenor of the National Fatherhood Research Network.
