Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli says a key part to his side’s recent on-field success has been due to midfield dominance.
The Bulldogs have won three straight games, improving their ledger to six wins and five losses, with the skipper stating their ability to move the ball quickly and efficiently has helped set up scoring opportunities.
“Our ability to take the ball from inside to outside – that’s probably been a key part of our wins,” Bontempelli told AFL 360 on Tuesday night.
“We’ve got quite fortunate midfield depth throughout the group, which is obviously where the game starts from a centre-bounce and stoppage aspect.
“It feels like, over the last couple of weeks we’ve had a more consistent output, and have been more damaging from a midfield perspective. That has brought the other parts of our game to the fore.
“If you’re able to give yourself momentum from stoppages and contests, win more 50-50s, your source pressure and tackling is better than the opposition – I think you’ve already got a bit of an upper hand. Then it’s just a matter of how you’re able to use it when you’ve got the ball going forward.”
The Bulldogs will be keen to avenge Geelong in Friday night’s blockbuster at Marvel Stadium, after a Gary Rohan after-the-siren goal handed the Dogs a five-point loss in their last encounter.
“You definitely enjoy the rematches of close ones – multiple times we’ve tried to get Tommy (Hawkins) and his boys down on their home deck which is a difficult, difficult one to do,” Bontempelli said.
“I know we play them there again later this year, so we’d potentially get another chance there but obviously we don’t have to look too far to Friday - where we get the chance to hopefully add to the recent history of close games and match-ups.”
