Western Bulldogs Development Coach Peter German looks at how each of the Bulldogs listed players are faring in the VFL for Williamstown.
Mitch Wallis: Played on ball but was tagged for most of the game – he still managed 29 possessions so most of his work was done inside and around of the contest and he did that pretty well. He set up some good attacks with his handballs in close and in tight.
Jason Tutt: Tutt played on the wing and half forward. He had some good opportunities on the outside to hit the scoreboard but probably didn’t make the most of those opportunities. It is an area that we have spoken about and worked on this week and he knows it’s an area he has to get better at. In the end he played a reasonable game but he expects more and we expect more as well.
Patrick Veszpremi: Paddy was probably a slow starter this week. His last quarter was really good, kicked the goal that really got us back on track and it was a real special effort with a chase then tackle. He then picked the ball up and snapped it from the boundary – so it was almost a goal of the day but it also came at the most important time. He did some good chases and put in a lot of effort to turn the momentum.
Nathan Hrovat: The rat won a fair bit of the ball and showed all the things we drafted him for – his ability to crumb and make good decisions with the ball under pressure and he played the game right out. It puts him in good stead for the promotion.
Christian Howard: It was one of his better games for us. We have drilled him about what is important in his game and he is starting to get better at that. He has good running ability and good foot skills and we saw that on the weekend and that was one of the features of his game. We are looking for him to back it up this week.
Dylan Addison: He played forward mostly and created that forward pressure that we require from him in that role. He also went back and played a bit in the back line in the second half, so he used his versatility and when Frankston kicked six goals straight in the last quarter we put Dylan behind the ball and he did really well. He got the game back on good terms for us.
Mark Austin: Aussie was probably a little bit down from what we usually get from him at Williamstown. I know he was a little bit disappointed in his game, so we will be looking for him to bounce back strongly this week.
Fletcher Roberts: It was certainly his best game for us this year. He only kicked one goal but his contest in the forward half and his recovery and second efforts to win the ball at ground level were very good. I think he won the most ground level possessions this week. He helped set up two or three important goals for us for the day. He is starting to find some form.
Lachie Hunter: Lachie again took big steps forward and kicked three goals. He really showed that he has some good goal awareness but is starting to understand the pace of the game and the demands at VFL level and is starting to put it into practice out on the ground. For two weeks in a row now he is really taking big setup forward in his development and is becoming a pretty good contributor as well.
Michael Talia: Tals was good. He was really strong and solid after a fair lay off with his injury. To come back and perform like he did was really pleasing, so he was certainly one of our best defenders.
Tom Campbell: Mainly in the ruck this week because he was our only ruckman and won a lot of tap outs. We probably didn’t get full value for them at ground level, we only just won the clearances but Tom totally dominated the ruck taps. Around the ground he was pretty good, he kicked a nice long goal from outside 50 and is starting to understand a bit more of what his strengths are and how he can utilise them.
Development Side
Alex Greenwood: Greeny was alright, he won his fair share of the ball but it was a scrappy game. He probably didn’t find much space on the outside and instead did most of his work on the inside and got most of his possessions there.
Josh Prudden: Josh is very stiff not being in our senior side. He was probably in our top three players against Collingwood. He was steady but probably not as influential as he would have liked or we would of liked. Again, young player learning each week about the demands no matter what level you play at. We expect him to bounce back this week.
Jarrad Grant: When you are playing in the forward line you are at the mercy of how well the team is going and the ball wasn’t even coming inside 50 at times, so that didn’t allow him to exert his influence on the game for four quarters. He showed he was a class above which we know he is, so this week he should be able to play in VFL seniors and find some form there.
