The future stars of women’s football will get their chance to revel in the excitement of the Bulldogs’ recent premiership success this weekend.

The Bulldogs will proudly unveil their 2018 premiership flag at VU Whitten Oval this Saturday night, before their Round 2 clash with Geelong.

The Dogs created Club history by winning their first AFLW premiership last year, in just the second year of the competition, defeating Brisbane by six points at Ikon Park.

To commemorate the achievement at its first home game for the 2019 campaign, the Club has themed an unfurling ceremony with a nod to the future, and an element of nostalgia and family.

Emerging women’s footballers Isabella Grant (daughter of Bulldogs’ Director of Football Chris Grant) and Bridie Garlick (daughter of former player and CEO Simon Garlick) will be presented with the premiership flag alongside coach Paul Groves, before hoisting it up the flagpole, acknowledging the key role both Bulldogs’ fathers played in the emergence of the Club’s AFLW team.

To kick off proceedings, approximately 40 junior female players from the Western Region Football League will usher a giant Bulldogs premiership banner to the centre of VU Whitten Oval.

“It will be a fantastic occasion for the football club to unfurl our inaugural premiership flag in front of our fans at VU Whitten Oval on Saturday night,” said Club CEO Ameet Bains.

“We are all incredibly proud of what our women achieved in the 2018 season, and it will be a great opportunity for our fans to recognise that feat.

“One great thing about the AFLW competition is that it has provided a clear pathway for girls who love footy to aspire to play at the elite level.

“We’re thrilled to be able to include Isabel and Bridie, and some of the young girls who are currently playing in the western region, to play a significant part in the flag unfurling ceremony.

“They watched on as our AFLW players made history last season, and their dreams of doing the same could also become a reality in the coming years, thanks to the AFLW competition.”

Fans attending the game between the Dogs and Cats are encouraged to be at Whitten Oval in time for the start of the ceremony, which kicks off at 6.25pm.
