Luke Beveridge addressed the media after his side’s 82-point loss to the Giants on Sunday, and westernbulldogs.com.au lists the five key takeaways.
1. Liberatore lost to suspected ACL
The 25-year-old’s knee buckled in the first quarter on Sunday and was helped off the ground by trainers, taking no further part. With scans still pending, Beveridge confirmed the Club is expecting the worst.
“The medicos have confirmed that he’s ruptured his ACL, (It’s) really unfortunate and disappointing.’’
‘’We were hoping for a bit of good luck with injury this year but it hasn’t started off to well. It’s the other knee, it’s the second one, but it’s on the other side.’’
2. Despite the loss, it’s one game in a long season
Beveridge conceded there weren’t a lot of positives to take from the loss, but the Club has another chance next weekend against the Eagles to get their season going.
‘’We’re better than that, we believe we are… you like to make a strong statement early and we didn’t, so I think what happens is now is that we go into Round 2 with a little bit more uncertainty, although certainly around what we need to fix up.
‘’We’ll go to work on it early in the week, pick ourselves up (because) ultimately it is one out of 22 and we’ll do our very, very best to find some momentum heading into Round 2.’’
3. Tim English continues to impress (and grow)
One positive was the signs being shown by the second-year ruckman, who according to Beveridge has now shot up to 207cm after being drafted at 205cm. He finished the game with 13 disposals (five contested), a game-high three contested marks, and four inside 50s.
‘’It was hard to find too many shining lights, but there was some encouraging signs from Tim, he competed pretty well in the ruck, gave us some presence up forward at different times.
‘’It was a very difficult day for him to play, obviously, when he’s showing a little bit. But some good signs, 207cm I think he is now, a young ruckman who can possibly take a catch forward. We’ve got some enthusiasm there.’’
4. Libba isn’t the only Canberra casualty
Former Docker Haydey Crozier looks to have damaged his medial, which will sideline him for a couple of weeks, but overall the health of the team on it’s way back to Melbourne is good.
‘’He’s strained his medial so he might miss a couple of weeks so we’ll confirm that when we get a chance. But other than Hayden and Tom, the other 20 are ok, albeit with a bit of fatigue… these are the tribulations we need to go through as we evolve and try to find ourselves again and we’ll work out how to replace a couple of boys that have gone down today.
