Adam Cooney will depart the Kennel, with the Western Bulldogs and Essendon agreeing to a deal that will see the Dogs receive the Bombers’ second round draft pick (pick 37 overall).
The trade was completed on the final morning of the 2014 NAB Trade Period.
This exchange forms part of a broader three way deal, that sees Essendon ruckman Paddy Ryder traded to Port Adelaide, in exchange for picks 17 and 37, with pick 37 on-traded to the Bulldogs in return for Cooney.
At the completion of this trade, the Bulldogs now hold three second round draft selections (pick 26, 27 and 37).
This trade follows the boom deal that saw the Bulldogs sign 2013 number one draft pick Tom Boyd from the Greater Western Sydney Giants on Wednesday, in return for Ryan Griffen and pick six in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.
The Club has also committed to taking athletic, tall defender Zaine Cordy as a father-son selection with its fourth round selection (currently pick 64) in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.
29-year-old Cooney departs the Bulldogs after 219 games, including a standout 2008 season in which he claimed the Brownlow Medal.
Cooney played 18 games in 2014, kicking 13 goals, averaging 19.7 disposals per match.
“Adam and Haylea’s contribution to the Club is well known and greatly appreciated - we wish him all the best in the future,” Simon Garlick said today.
